We’ve talked about how a home should reflect your personality, how colours and textures can influence a space. But another thing your home should possess is a feeling of homecoming, or a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. Your home should be a space you look forward to getting back to after a long work day or a trip.

Think of a space you love going to; one that makes you feel relaxed and happy. This could be your childhood home, your yoga studio, church, temple, wherever. You could try to recreate a similar vibe within your home, borrowing specific elements. From décor to flooring to  colours and even using fragrances and incense, you can make your home a welcoming sanctuary and more than just a place where you eat, sleep and bathe.

Familiarity Breeds Coziness

It’s great to change things up, décor wise (and we believe in this mantra at Cubs!) but there’s also comfort in sticking with something that’s routine  and familiar when it comes to creating a sense of homecoming. This could be in the form of a candle or incense stick that you like, family photographs, heirloom furniture pieces, a favourite blanket/cushion or bouquet of flowers. Adding something that invokes a memory always makes you feel at home.

Little Touches

Little things go a long way in creating a sense of homecoming. Some flowers, using your favourite soap in the bathroom, a bowl of candy, nuts or dates on your dining table/sideboard anyone can dig into: these are simple things that can add a pop of happiness to the daily grind. Little touches also makes guests feel more welcome when they visit!

Plants

We cant stress enough the importance of keeping plants in your home. And the great thing is, you don’t need a big balcony or garden to keep them. A small potted plant or a succulent will work just fine if you don’t have the time to tend to larger ones. You can even ask someone to gift you a lucky bamboo. Plants breathe life and energy to any room; and you’ll never feel like you’ve walked into an empty house with them around.

Display Memories

Photographs and artwork go a long way in making a house feel like a home. Every picture and piece of art you own has a memory attached to it; where it was taken; what made you buy a certain painting, and so on. And of course, your kids artwork will have its own story to tell! So display the curios and pictures you own and surround yourself with happy memories- and they’re great conversation starters for guests, too!
