When I think of the colour Orange, what I visualise is the sunrise in the mountains and the sunset in the evenings. How the ball of sun brings about the splendid warm glow around and transcends into our home and heart! How the heart craves to view the amazing sight, just once more.

Corner at home

Orange has always enjoyed a special and prominent place in the décor scenario. If you pause to think for a moment, orange has been widely used, along with turmeric yellow and the fiery red. In fact, it is a colour like no other and is a much easier colour to work around with. It has that muted appeal which you cannot expect from the fierce looking red or the mild yellow.

Let us have a look how we can utilise the colour orange in our home and achieve a décor scheme like no other.

The traditional home

The traditional home

Orange is a bright colour that defines grandeur and opulence. It can be used suitably to create mood and drama. Furnishings in various shades of orange can work well for an ethnic feel at home.

The way to go about it is using the colour wisely. Get a featured wall in orange and accordingly mix and match it with furnishings such as the area rug or cushions on the sofa. Here one can keep the other accessories subtle for the orange to stand out!In another instance, complete the ensemble of orange by scheming the orange textured wall with the upholstery in the given space.

Again, if you are a person fond of antiques and rich textiles, then experiment with orange. Orange has the innate ability to merge well with traditional elements such as wood, brass and metal elements too!

Create a rustic scheme with orange!

Create a rustic scheme with orange

Orange or rust is the colour of our Earth, ‘Maati’. The very normal homes of the common man always had a warm orange glow from the mud diyas lighted in the evenings. The mud diyas have been replaced by the innumerous variety of lamps that we get now a days but the orange glow illuminating our abodes remains the same.

Apart from that, there are many folk and tribal art work, predominantly loaded with the colour that shouts the name loud! Bring home such Indian art like worli from Maharashtra or a Kerala Mural art that can help you give a rustic feel at home.

Orange undoubtedly is the colour closest to mother Earth. Floorings and tiles in various shades of orange, wall art all combined together bring about the rustic appeal just too brilliantly!

A modern, contemporary living with orange! We have seen how Orange can become a favourite choice when one wants to have a rustic ambience or a traditional feel. But fret not! A modern décor is also completely possible with the said colour.

The trick here is to use the colour sparingly without going overboard. A tinge of orange for the headboard paired with the right, orange bed elements in the otherwise neutral room brings about the necessary charm to the area.Contemporary setting often infuses a lot of metal in their décor and orange in a darker hue can be a suitable partner. Minimal décor with orange in highlight gives a décor that feels energetic and youthful.

The secret lies in pairing!Have you tried to pair orange with another colour? As I have so far maintained orange is an excellent colour to work with. When paired with the other colours in the citrus family like yellow or mint green, it lends a very peppy, fun and lively environment.

Now try pairing it with a turquoise blue. Orange with the rich blue gives a royal treatment.Orange also goes very well with shades of grey. A variety of combination can be tried with orange giving an overall satisfactory and a pleasing, eye catchy décor.

Let me conclude by saying that as in our Tricolour Orange stands for courage and sacrifice, similar symbolic interpretation can be made for the colour in our décor. Orange is a bold colour but at the same time, it can give a subdued effect when used in moderation and in combination with other earthy elements. That’s the beauty of the colour- Orange!
